I learned afterward that this is the author's first novel, and I think it shows. I felt like deus ex machina was a strong driver of the story and that should really not be the case. I thought the writing was decent (if overdone at times) and the bare bones of the story were ok, but the characters were not realistic enough and there were too many convenient twists. This icon is how excited I am that this book is over.ġ) I gave it a 2/5. Thanks to the reading group discussion section at the end of the book for helping with some of the questions! What do you think could have changed your opinion of the book?ĥ) Will you read any of the other books in the series? (They are not about Joe and Fiona, or at least the next one is not.)Ħ) Anything else you want to say about the book for the last discussion? Do you think that women today are different from their late 19th century counterparts? In what ways? In what ways are they the same?Ĥ) It seems from the discussions we've had that most people who have read the book along with us have not been crazy about it. 1) What did (or would) you rate The Tea Rose out of 5?Ģ) Were you surprised by the Jack the Ripper reveal, or did you expect it? Any particular thing that tipped you off if you guessed it?ģ) Though The Tea Rose is set in the past, Fiona has a very modern sensibility and faces many problems that 21st century women face.
